Studies have Shown Another way to Treat your Acne Scars..

But Is Filler The Best Way To Treat Acne Scars? Here is what we found

A reminder of bad skin days gone by, acne scars come in many shapes and forms, punctuating our skin with rough, uneven texture that is difficult to remove. While some manage to make their peace with these indentations, others find they impact upon their entire lives. Studies have shown that aside from causing embarrassment, feelings of self-consciousness, anxiety and depression, acne scarring can also negatively impact upon job satisfaction and relationships. Put simply, these small marks can have pretty serious effects.

If you’ve suffered from acne scars, you might already have experimented with fractional lasers, religious retinol application and micro-needling treatments galore, but there is another way, less widely discussed, that can offer immediate relief from the dips and dents: filler.

“For broad, flat scars that are relatively small with a slight depression, we can use filler to fill the
pock mark up,” says Dr Sarah Tonks, aesthetic doctor at The Lovely Clinic in London. “When hyaluronic acid is injected, it causes new collagen growth which means, over time, the skin will naturally plump and begin to fill scar marks.” Depending on the nature of the scar, she uses Juverderm Volite or Volbella for the task which, she says, are softer than the old kinds of fillers; meaning they carry much less risk of causing unsightly lumps afterwards.

It’s not just the filler itself that helps minimise scars, it’s the technique used to insert it, too. “As well as a needle, you can also use a cannula to break up the scar tissue from underneath it,” says Tonks.

“The trauma to the skin prompts even more collagen growth and encourages the body to produce more, too.” It sounds near barbaric but isn’t nearly as bad in reality, according to Tonks – plus, numbing cream can be applied ahead of the treatment.

“It works really well combined with laser or micro-needling because then you’re tackling the problem from above and beneath,” says Tonks, who recommends around three treatments, depending on the severity of the scarring, with top-up sessions every six to 12 months. Because it’s working underneath the skin, expect some initial bruising – a problem easily concealed with some mineral foundation.

Starting from £595 at The Lovely Clinic, this is a treatment that can transform the way we look and, more importantly, feel.
