Have you ever found that the
lipstick shade you swatched on your hand doesn’t look the same when you swipe
it on your lips? That’s because the colour of the skin on your hands is a
completely different colour than your lips. The skin on your hands is more of a
neutral canvas, whereas your lips have more of a pink tint that’s going to skew
the lipstick colour. So what’s the solution you ask? Neutralize your lips with
concealer before applying your lipstick.
We asked New York City makeup artist
Katie Jane Hughes for her tips on how to get the most out of this trick. Using
the same concealer you use for under-eye circles or zits, “dab a little across
your lips using your finger,” says Hughes. “It will help neutralize the colour
of your lips, so your lipstick can pop as well as appear more opaque.” We also
love that it acts as a primer, filling in fine lines and adding grip to help
lipstick last longer and stay in place. After you’ve applied your lipstick,
create a crisp rim around your lips by cleaning up the edges with a little
concealer on a small makeup brush.
