Thieves have pulled off a sweet heist in Europe, stealing 12 tons of KitKat bars worth a fortune in chocolate joy.
The truck carrying 413,793
units of KitKat’s new Formula One-themed chocolate range vanished while
traveling from central Italy to Poland.
In a statement, KitKat revealed that the confectionery, which is manufactured by Swiss firm Nestle, was stolen when the vehicle was distributing the bars along a
route running from a factory in central Italy to Poland.“The vehicle and its contents remain
unaccounted for, and investigations are ongoing in close collaboration with
local authorities and supply chain partners,” the statement reads.
According to the KitKat
company, a total of 413,793 KitKat bars were stolen and each one is traceable
using on-pack batch numbers, and KitKat has asked anyone who finds a match to
alert the company.
The statement also cited a
joint report from the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) and the
Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) EMEA, which concluded that
cargo theft and freight fraud are on the rise and becoming more sophisticated.
“We’ve always encouraged
people to have a break with KITKAT – but it seems thieves have taken the
message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our
chocolate.
“Whilst we appreciate the
criminals’ exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an
escalating issue for businesses of all sizes,” the statement added.
In a statement posted on
Instagram on Sunday, KitKat added that “there are no concerns for consumer
safety, and supply is not affected.”
