A new study by researchers from the German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE) and international partners has identified a distinct "Peanut Lipidomic Signature" (PeLS) in the blood following regular peanut consumption.
Very Long-Chain Saturated Fatty Acids (VLCSFAs): Eating peanuts significantly
increases circulating levels of VLCSFAs, specifically C24:0 (tetracosanoic acid) and C22:0 (behenic acid).
· Lipid Remodeling: These fatty acids do not just raise overall fat levels; they are actively and preferentially incorporated into specific lipid classes—
such as ceramides—through the coordinated work of chain-elongating enzymes.·
Metabolic Impact:
Using high-resolution mass spectrometry ("deep lipidomics"), the
research demonstrates that peanuts trigger a complex metabolic remodeling of
the blood lipidome rather than a simple caloric contribution.
Broader
Cardiovascular Context: Complementary data from intervention
and cohort studies (such as the ARISTOTLE
study and the EPIC-Potsdam Study) link this peanut-induced lipid profile to a lower risk of
cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Previous trials also
note reductions in blood triglycerides and improved total-to-HDL cholesterol
ratios. [1,
