A new study has prove that minimal exercise can have huge health
benefits.
You don't need
to exercise every day to reap health benefits, according to a new study in JAMA Internal
Medicine. Researchers at the University of Sydney found
that those who workout just twice a week, they call them weekend warriors, had
a lower chance of dying from cancer, cardiovascular disease, or any other cause
than those who were sedentary.
The study
defined weekend warriors as those who clocked 75 minutes/week of vigorous
exercise or 150 minutes/week of moderate exercise in just two sessions. They
analyzed the surveys of 63,591 responders and found that the mortality risk for
active adults, even if infrequently, was 30% lower than those who rarely or
never exercised. So just two moderate exercise sessions a week can quite
literally save your life.
"It is
very encouraging news that being physically active on just one or two occasions
per week is associated with a lower risk of death, even among people who do
some activity but don't quite meet recommended exercise levels," the
study's senior author, Associate Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis from the
University of Sydney, told Science-Daily.
"However, for optimal health benefits from physical activity it is always
advisable to meet and exceed the physical activity recommendations."
So all you
need to do is clock-in an hour and 15 minutes of intense exercise, or two and a
half hours of moderate activity, sometime during the work week or weekend to
keep yourself healthy. Running, walking, dancing like a fool, it doesn't
matter. While it might not whittle your waist rapidly, science now proves that
it's better than doing nothing at all.
