Health: Coconut Oil Is Called ‘Poison’ By Harvard Medical Professor

We don’t want to alarm you, but everything you thought you knew about beloved coconut oil is apparently woefully wrong. That’s right, the oil that was meant to cure everything from yellow teeth to obesity, has been labelled worse than actual lard.

Providing us with these bitter, bitter truth pills is Professor Karin Michel, director of the Institute for Prevention and Tumour Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg and a professor at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

In a lecture called Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Error, translated by Business Insider, the clever party-pooper said the influencer-friendly food is, ‘one of the worst foods you can eat’, stating that
‘coconut oil is pure poison.’

In fact, Michels explained that, since the ingredient is made up almost exclusively of saturated fatty acids (the stuff that clogs you coronary arteries and is believed to be linked to all kinds of cancers), there are little-to-no health benefits in coconut oil consumption.

Similarly, Michels wants to debunk the idea that food such as acai, chia seeds and matcha are ‘superfoods’. Whilst she states they are far from harmful, they are no more super than other food containing the same nutrients, like ‘carrots, cherries and apricots.’

On the up side, if you're health-conscious about your eating this will no doubt decrease your weekly spend. However, if you love coconut oil like we do, you're going to have to think about curbing your addiction.
