If there's any red carpet where you can (and frankly
should) make a fashionstatement, it's at the Council of
Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards. On Monday night, host Issa Rae came ready to say
something through her clothes—literally.
The Insecure star/creator
stunned in a glittering one-shouldered Kerby Jean-Raymond for Pyer Moss
jumpsuit with a long train. But even with the 180,000 Swarovski crystals
shining on it, the real standout was her simple black belt which
contained a message that couldn't be missed.
The lyric "Every N— Is a Star,"
was written on it in cursive white text. Its designer, Jean-Raymond, told People that the idea for the belt was actually his,
and it references the title of a song by Boris Gardiner that played
during the Pyer Moss fall/winter 2018 runway show. The song was also featured
in the Oscar-winning movie Moonlight.
“Comedically, she’s my spirit animal. It’s
also very important because [the CFDAs are] in
Brooklyn, a mile away from where
I grew up,” he said.
The statements didn't stop with her outfits,
though. Rae had plenty to say during the ceremony, even taking a moment to
reference Kanye West recently describing slavery as "a choice." (In
case you forgot, his wife Kim K was at this show,
even though Kanye wasn't).
“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black.
Only when it’s convenient," she said, according to USA Today. "That joke was my
choice, just like slavery.”
Rae is the first black person to host the
CFDA Awards in its 17-year history.
