Hair Loss At A Young Age? Here Are Five Things You Must Do

Hair loss is usually linked to old age, but these days, many young people are experiencing receding hairlines and bald patches much earlier than expected. This condition, known as premature balding, can seriously affect one’s confidence and

self-esteem.

Some common causes of premature hair loss include hereditary factors, hormonal changes, stress, poor diet, scalp infections, and the excessive use of harsh hair products or tight hairstyles.

Medical conditions such as thyroid disorders and autoimmune diseases can also trigger shedding, making early detection and care very important.

If you notice your hairline is receding earlier than normal, here are five things you should do to save it now.

1. Prioritise a balanced diet

Just like every other part of the body, your hair needs the right nutrients to grow strong and healthy. Deficiencies in protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, and other key nutrients have been linked to thinning and hair loss. On the other hand, diets rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory foods support follicle health.

If your hair is already receding, avoid crash diets and cut down on sugary or alcoholic drinks, both of which are tied to premature thinning.

2. Reduce your stress level

High stress is a well-known trigger for hair loss. It disrupts the hair growth cycle and can speed up balding. Practising relaxation techniques such as meditation, getting enough sleep, and staying active can restore balance and even encourage regrowth in some cases. Stress-related hair loss is often temporary, but leaving it unchecked for too long can cause lasting damage.

3. Avoid harsh hairstyles and chemicals

Many young people unknowingly damage their hair through styling choices and chemicals. Tight braids, cornrows, and ponytails pull on the roots, leading to traction alopecia, which gradually pushes the hairline back. Likewise, frequent use of relaxers, dyes, or heat tools weakens the strands and makes them prone to breakage.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, limiting chemical treatments, curling irons, flat irons, and hot combs, among others, can help protect one’s hairline.

Natural hairstyles and protective options, such as silk pillowcases, can also reduce friction and hair loss while you sleep.

4. Care for your scalp

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. When clogged with oil, dirt, or product buildup, the scalp suffocates follicles and slows growth. Regular washing with a mild shampoo keeps it clean without harsh stripping. Massaging the scalp daily for five to ten minutes boosts blood circulation, ensuring nutrients reach the follicles.

Natural oils such as rosemary, castor, and coconut oil have been shown to support scalp health and stimulate regrowth. DIY remedies like clay pre-washes and ginger masks are also becoming popular among those looking for natural solutions.

5. Consult a specialist early

If your hairline is changing quickly, don’t wait until baldness becomes advanced. A dermatologist or trichologist can determine whether the cause is hormonal, nutritional, or medical. Early treatment often yields better results. Options such as topical minoxidil, which promotes regrowth, and oral finasteride, which slows male-pattern baldness, are proven to help.

Acting early can make the difference between keeping your hairline and losing it permanently.
